If you are planning an international getaway this year, you might just end up with a piece of U.S. history in your hands.
To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (July 4th, 1776), the U.S. State Department has officially introduced a limited-edition commemorative U.S. passport. This rollout is part of a broader push to foster national pride during the milestone celebrations.
What Makes the Limited-Edition Passport Unique?
The limited-edition passport introduces a highly distinct look meant to serve as a keepsake of the nation’s 250th birthday.
While the traditional dark blue front cover remains intact, the interior and back elements feature brand-new patriotic designs:
- The Inside Cover: The interior page features a portrait of President Donald Trump alongside his official signature, set over a stylized, patriotic image of the Declaration of Independence.
- The Back Cover: Mockups released by the State Department reveal an embossed flag design on the back cover, with a circle of stars framing the number “250”.
- No Extra Fees: The State Department confirmed that this commemorative book will be made available to qualifying travelers with no additional fees beyond the standard government passport pricing.
Where and How Can You Get One?
Because this is a strict “limited-edition” passport, you won’t be able to get it just anywhere.
Currently, the State Department is only distributing this commemorative design through the Washington Passport Agency in Washington, D.C.
It is being issued automatically to anyone who processes an urgent, in-person application at the physical Washington Passport Agency in D.C., meaning if you use that specific office, you will receive this limited-edition design by default and cannot opt out.
Standard regional passport offices across the country and the standard online renewal system will continue to print and issue the classic Next Generation Passport (NGP) design.

To apply for an appointment at the Washington Passport Agency, travelers must currently meet standard urgent travel requirements:
- Have confirmed proof of international travel departing within 14 days (two weeks).
- Pay the standard $60 government expedite fee.
Note: While a White House official noted that the administration is looking into whether they might waive the “imminent travel within 2 weeks” restriction for this specific book, standard agency rules apply until further notice.
If you are a traveler looking to collect this unique souvenir, or a travel advisor helping a client renew their documents, keep these logistics in mind:
Routine Renewals Remain Standard: If you submit a standard renewal by mail or use the online portal, you will receive the classic U.S. passport book. You do not need to worry about any unexpected layout changes.
Plan Ahead for Urgent Travel: If you live near the D.C. metro area or find yourself needing an emergency passport appointment at the Washington Passport Agency, you will be issued this commemorative “America250” book. Ensure your clients are aware of the interior styling beforehand so there are no surprises at the gate.
Validity Status: Rest assured, despite the unique artwork, this limited-edition passport functions exactly like a standard U.S. passport. It features the same top-tier security tech, biometric chips, and international validity for global entry.

If you want a regular passport, just apply normally anywhere in the country. If you specifically want this rare limited-edition version, you must book an emergency appointment at the physical D.C. agency right before an international trip.
